Central American Port - Puerto Cortés, Honduras Installs Weigh-In-Motion Container Weighing Systems

Minneapolis, MN – Intercomp recently partnered with Puerto Cortés in Honduras for the installation of Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) systems. The integrated systems are monitoring vehicle and container weights for Method 1 SOLAS compliance at the gate of the port complex.
Installed within vehicle lanes, the WIM sensors weigh the vehicle and cargo without having to stop traffic. Puerto Cortés has several sites within the port complex, maintaining tare weights of the vehicles yielding accurate container weights for the terminal operating system.
“The strip sensors operate as dynamic weighbridges,” explains Jon Arnold, Market Specialist for Intercomp Company, “using strain gauge technology similar to static weighbridges but without vehicle stoppage, space and maintenance requirements associated with static equipment.” Puerto Cortés WIM sensors are placed in channels cut into the roadway and grouted in place, without the need for drains or extensive civil works.
Integrating the sensors into existing traffic flow with radio frequency identification (RFID) and terminal operating software, the system automates the acquisition of VGM while screening and preventing overloads from entry and subsequent reshuffling of containers in the yard.
As part of their array of weighing scales and systems, Intercomp offers in-ground dynamic weighing equipment that can be integrated into existing gate facilities capable of interfacing with the TOS to provide Method 1 container VGMs.
