Hamburg, Germany – With SOLAS Chapter VI Verified Gross Mass (VGM) regulations coming into effect July 1st, 2016, port and terminal operators are working quickly to implement solutions that would minimize disruption to their operations.
At the recent TOC Europe conference in Hamburg, Germany, Eric Peterson, Vice President, Intercomp Company spoke about US practices and how these experiences can benefit terminals throughout the world. “For decades, OSHA regulations have required weights to be established prior to lifting the container,” Peterson stated. With the US Coast Guard recently affirming SOLAS requirements are met by OSHA compliance, ports and terminals have clarity on how to address acquisition of container VGM.
“Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) technology at the gate has several advantages,” he continued, “dynamic weighbridges can be integrated into existing processes, automating the acquisition of VGM earlier in supply chain, while screening and preventing overloads from entry and subsequent reshuffling of containers in the yard.”
As part of their array of weighing scales and systems, Intercomp offers in-ground dynamic weighing equipment that can be integrated into existing gate facilities capable of interfacing with the TOS to provide Method 1 container VGMs. Click Here to view Options.
